In addition, each ship totes a limited number of bombs that explode in specific ways, depending on whether you're attacking using standard shots or the laser. You refill the gauge by downing enemy ships.

Likewise, activating the Hyper Counter when your ship's Hyper Counter Gauge is full lets you destroy enemy bullets until the gauge is depleted, thus acting as another defensive technique. It can also deflect stronger lasers from larger enemies, too, if your ship is in Boost Mode (which means pilots using Bomb Style cannot use this skill).

For example, holding the fire button transforms your ship's laser attack into an incredibly useful defensive Counter Laser that pushes back weaker enemy lasers. Destroy All Monstersĭespite their differences, DoDonPachi Resurrection's vehicles have a few universal similarities. For example, Ikaruga may have a cool polarity-switching gimmick, but you cannot alter how the lone ship plays. These wonderful combinations of ships and styles let you engage the enemy in a manner that best suits your playstyle, giving DoDonPachi Resurrection an extra layer of depth not found in many shmups. The downside is that cancelled bullets don't feed your ship's Hyper Counter Gauge-more on that in a bit. Strong Style is a hybrid configuration that feeds you bombs after your ship is destroyed, and offers Boost Mode. This option, however, starts you with zero bombs. Power Style lets you manually switch between Normal Mode's speed and Boost Mode's increased damage output. In a nice touch, it causes your ship to automatically drop one of your enemy-and-projectile-clearing bombs when you're about to be destroyed by an enemy attack, thus giving you another shot at life. In addition, there are three selectable attack styles-Bomb, Power, and Strong-that let you further customize your vehicle.īomb Style is a noob-friendly configuration that offers a decent shot and three bombs. Type A (which fires a narrow laser stream), Type B (which fires forward and to the side with rotatable guns), and Type C (which fires a three-way blast, similar to Contra's spread gun). Still, it's an incredibly hectic (in a good way!) experience that genre fans will love.ĭoDonPachi has a selection of three armed-to-the-teeth ships to blast the alien invaders into scrap metal. Unfortunately, it's limited to local play, so you can't eradicate the encroaching fleet with online players. You can share the raw exuberance by flying into battle and annihilating everything that moves with a friend in the included two-player mode. As a result, you can bob and weave between the elements that comprise the neon-colored onslaught to evade fire and position yourself for retaliatory strikes-and the experience is absolutely thrilling. In fact, bullets and lasers can graze your ship's sprite and not register as a hit. Your aircraft's hitbox, the area that causes the game to recognize collisions, is so small that it gives you the wiggle room to weave between the incoming gunfire.

DoDonPachi will crush those who are unwilling to learn its surprisingly deep systems.ĭespite the tremendous challenge, however, DoDonPachi Resurrection isn't an unjust game. There are times when there are so many enemy bullets and lasers on screen, rushing toward you in colorful curtains and waves, that the mission appears overwhelming. Like Mushihimesama, DoDonPachi Resurrection is a vertically scrolling manic shmup that spews a ridiculous number of projectiles onto the battlefield. That said, the tale is a just a thin layer of frosting on a delicious cake that attempts to destroy you every time you take a bite. Though the narrative isn't particularly deep, I appreciate Cave's efforts to tell a tale that has a bit more substance than the vague one Treasure penned for Ikaruga. There's a lightweight story in place that involves your pilot time-traveling into the past to combat the invading forces, which results in not one, but two pleasing Twilight Zone-like endings, depending on your skill level and willingness to complete the game multiple times.

Angry Leader BeeĭoDonPachi Resurrection, like Cave's other shmup releases on Windows PCs, pits your lone fighter craft against a massive fleet of mechanized alien attack vehicles.

The $29.99 PC game's arrival was a long time coming, but it was unquestionably well worth the wait. Now, more than a decade after securing a spot as one of the all-time great arcade and console bullet-hell games, DoDonPachi Resurrection arrives on PC courtesy of Degica, the company that helped bring other Cave-developed shooters to Steam. Androids and time travel play significant roles in both Dragon Ball Z and DoDonPachi Resurrection, but unlike the massively overrated Toei Animation-produced anime, this legendary shoot-'em-up surrounds those plot points with exquisitely designed action.
